Bulgaria Chair of National Milk Producers Association Has Been Arrested

The Police have arrested the Chair of the National Association of Milk Producers in Bulgaria, Adrian Tsakonski along with three other farmers on Wednesday citing as reason the failure to stop the public butchering of calves.

The order to discontinue such butchering had come earlier from the Regional Veterinary Services in the city of Vratsa.

A protest of the milk producers against the government's policy in the sector and unpaid subsidies was scheduled to take place Wednesday in Northwestern Bulgaria to support the milk producers from the Kardzhali region, who have been demonstrating for days now.

Farmers from the region of Vratsa have said they were going to butcher and grill four calves because in desperate situations Bulgarians usually were starting to eat and drink.

The protesters have also said they are to send the calves' heads to the leaders of the three-way ruling coalition, who have "destroyed the animal breeding sector in Bulgaria."

Despite the warning coming from the Veterinary Services in Vratsa that such butchering was a violation of the Law for Veterinary Services, two of the protesters' three calves have been butchered. Tsakonski and three of his supporters have been arrested after the butchering.

Farmers from Northwestern Bulgaria had blocked the road from Vratsa to Oriahovo. Currently there is a detour for the Oriahovo Ferry.

Earlier Wednesday Bulgarian milk producers from all over the county announced that they were going to block main roads as a sign of protest.

Rallies were planned Silistra, Veliko Tarnovo, Kazanlak, Karlovo, Stara Zagora, Plovdiv, Petrich, and Sandanski.
