The Bulgarian lost to komusubi Asasekiryo, who used a move in which he grabbed Kotooshu's belt at the front and the back, and brought him down.
Kotooshu already has four victories and three losses. During the eighth round of the tournament on Sunday he will face maegashira Tochinonada.
Ozeki Kotooshu, who won the previous classic sumo tournament for the Emperor's Cup, will stand a chance of moving to the highest rank of yokozuna if he wins the Nagoya tournament as well.
