The planned annual repair works on Unit 5 of Bulgaria's Nuclear Power Plant Kozloduy, which started on June 7, have been completed two weeks earlier than scheduled.

The reactor was turned on Friday night after all modernization work, refueling, and routine inspections had been completed, and a permit was issued by the Sofia-based Nuclear Regulation Agency.

The Executive Director of the plant Ivan Genov announced Saturday the modernization efforts were in accordance with the global standards for the permanent upgrade of the safety and security of nuclear facilities.

Genov pointed out that as a result of the performed improvements, the 1000-MW reactor was going to produce an additional 200 000 MW/h of electricity in 2008.

With respect to the allegations that the Kozloduy NPP used recycled nuclear fuel because it was cheaper, its Executive Director said that in fact it was not cheaper.

He pointed out that Russia was a supplier of recycled nuclear fuel but only for reactors of the Chernobyl type, which the Bulgarian plant did not have.

Genov explained the recycled nuclear fuel had been tested for three years now in the Russian city of Kaliningrad, but that export license for it could be issued only after four years of tests had been successfully completed.

The Kozloduy Director also stated the recent media campaign against the plant could not be coming from proponents of renewable energy sources because the nuclear energy was not an alternative to the renewable sources.
