Bulgaria Government to Finance Bulgarian Schools Abroad

Bulgaria's Minister of Education Daniel Valchev announced Thursday that his Ministry was going to insist before the cabinet that a special program for the funding of Bulgarian schools abroad be included in the 2009 State Budget.

In Sofia Valchev took part in a roundtable on the problems and perspectives of the Bulgarian schools abroad. He pointed out the Bulgarian state should help Bulgarian kids living abroad at least with their education in Bulgarian language, history, and geography.

The new program will provide grants for which Bulgarian educational institutions located abroad could apply.

The criteria for funding are to be crafted by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the State Agency for Bulgarians abroad.

The Minister announced that apart from the three Bulgarian schools in Prague, Bratislava, and Budapest, which were officially part of Bulgaria's school system, there were three other types of Bulgarian schools abroad.

In his words, there were schools at the Bulgarian embassies in fifteen states. Then there are 50 other Bulgarian schools, which are located in 25 different countries, and which are not related to the embassies there.

Finally, in seven different states there are 18 Bulgarian schools, which are part of the educational system of the respective nation.

Valchev said Bulgaria was already helping some of these schools by sending textbooks and teachers. In his words, the Ministry of Education was going to prepare a register of all Bulgarian schools abroad, which would be published online in 2009.

The Ministry is also preparing online textbooks for Bulgarian kids living abroad.
