The Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) Party Women's Union was established Sunday while Doctor Genoveva Alexieva was elected as the Union's first chair.

The Union's main goals include involvement of women in the social, political, business and cultural life in the country and the encouragement of their active participation in all of the above areas.

The Union is also going to support any initiative that is contributing or would contribute to the integration of Bulgarian women in the European structures.

In addition to Doctor Alexieva, seven other women have been nominated as the Union's Chair, including the mother of famous Bulgarian football star Dimitar Berbatov.

The leader of the GERB Party and Sofia's Mayor Boyko Borisov stated at the founding meeting Sunday that the situation of many women in some areas in Bulgaria is similar to the one of the Albanian women where every fifth woman is victim of domestic abuse. Borisov also added that women work harder, are more disciplined and less corrupt than men. He stated the above as the reason to have five female Deputy Mayors in the Sofia Municipality from a total of seven as well as the reason why from the five GERB European Parliament members three are women.
