Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov is in Paris Sunday to participate in a meeting between the 27 Member States of the European Union and the 12 Mediterranean countries that are members of the Barcelona Process.

Parvanov has been officially invited by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and is accompanied by his wife Zorka Parvanova, according to the President's press-center.

A total of 43 Heads of State and Government are meeting on 13 July in Paris to officially inaugurate the Union for the Mediterranean.

The Union for the Mediterranean project, which aims to strengthen and deepen the cooperation between both sides of the Mediterranean, was launched a little over a year ago by the French Head of State.

Participants in the Summit are going to discuss cooperation in priority areas such as economic development, food and water safety, energy production, environmental protection, protection of civil rights, education and political dialogue.

The President of the French Republic and current President of the Council of the European Union will welcome the participants at the Grand Palais for an afternoon of debates, which will conclude with the adoption of the first concrete projects of the Union for the Mediterranean.

The meeting will be followed by a dinner for the participants to be held at the Petit Palais. Bulgaria's President and Bulgaria's First Lady are among the dinner guests.

They have also been invited to participate Monday in the official celebration of July 14th, the French National Holiday.

The Bulgarian delegation includes Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Ivaylo Kalfin and several of the President's Secretaries.
