Bulgaria Rightist Extremists Call for Anti-Gay Measures: Rightist Extremists Call for Anti-Gay Measures in Bulgaria The extreme rightist and nationalist Bulgarian National Union led by Boyan Rasate, a former associate of the Ataka party, is calling for large-scale anti-gay measures in Bulgaria in light of a gay parade to take place June 28 in Sofia.(Sofia Photo Agency)

The extreme nationalist Bulgarian National Union is planning to stage a "Week of Intolerance" in response to a gay parade planned to take place in Sofia on June 28.

The news was announced by the leader of the formation Boyan Rasate on Sunday who also stated that the homosexuals in Bulgaria enjoyed strong political protection.

"There are homosexuals in all political parties that one can think of. I have not heard of homosexuals in the Bulgarian Agrarian People's Union", Rasate said.

The "Intolerance Week" that his people are planning is also going to include a round table on how to restrict manifestations of homosexuality.

Aksiniya Gencheva from the Bulgarian gay organization "Gemini" defined the moves of the Bulgarian National Union as attempt to get political benefits.

She said also that the BNU's demand that gay organizations be banned contradicted the Constitution and the right of free association.

Gencheva believes that fascist-like organization were way more harmful to society. Gemini expects that the extreme rightists would launch a protest on the day of the planned gay parade.

Boyan Rasate and his National Union became famous in 2007 with their attempt to organize a private national guard with its own uniforms and symbols allegedly to protect the majority of the population by the many crimes committed by Bulgarian citizens of Roma origin.

This move sparked a reaction on part of Roma organizations, which moved to set up their own guard for protection against the nationalists. Both moves, however, turned out to be short-lived.
