Top Broadway Productions Win Recognition at Tony Awards Ceremony

Musical production South Pacific scooped seven Tony Awards, including musical revival, at Sunday's ceremony, held at Radio City Music Hall in New York and hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, BBC reported.

The show also picked up best director, four design awards including set, costumes, lighting and sound and Paulo Szot took best musical leading actor.

Pulitzer Prize-winning August: Osage County won best play, while In the Heights was named best musical.

The latter received three more prizes including best original score for the theatre, best choreography and best orchestrations.

The original production of South Pacific - composed by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II - won nine Tonys in 1950.

Gypsy, which was South Pacific's main competition, took three of the four musical performance awards.

Patti LuPone won the actress-musical prize for her performance as Rose.

It was her second Tony after receiving her first award in 1980 for playing Eva Peron in Evita.
