People in Sofia will pay BGN 1 for a regular ticket for one trip in the public transport of the Bulgarian capital after July 1, as decided by the Sofia Municipal Council on Thursday.

The proposal for the 43% increase over the current price of BGN 0,7 was filed by the Deputy Mayor Velizar Stoilov and the municipality's Transport Commission Chair Radoslav Toshev, who say the measure is motivated by the rising fuel prices.

The ten-trip ticket will cost BGN 7,5 up from the current BGN 6, while a monthly ticket is to cost BGN 50.

The new measure provides for no changes in the prices of the monthly tickets for students, retirees, disabled people and orphans.

Municipal councillors of Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB), as well as councillors of the Bulgarian Socialist Party voted against the proposition but could not prevent its acceptance due to the majority of councillors of the GERB party of Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov.

According to DSB, the new prices are not correctly calculated and there are missing reports over the expenses of the public transport company.

In April, mayor Boyko Borisov publicly declared that the price of the transport ticket could not be raised unless the service improved.
