Finland Awards World's Largest Technology Prize

The President of Finland Tarja Helonen presented Wednesday afternoon Professor Robert Langer with the 2008 Millennium Technology Prize - the world's largest technology award.

Professor Langer, whose biomedical engineering laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the largest in the world, was awarded for developing innovative biomaterials for controlled drug release.

He received the prize of EUR 800 000 and the "Peak" trophy at the Grand Award Ceremony in Finland's capital Helsinki.

The Millennium Technology Price is awarded for a technological innovation that significantly improves the quality of human life and promotes sustainable development.

It is presented every other year by the Technology Academy Finland, which is an independent foundation established by the Finnish industry in cooperation with the state of Finland.
