Bulgaria's Parliament started the debates on the two latest bills on conflict of interests involving the state civil servants.

The Justice Minister Miglena Tacheva, who addressed the MPs with respect of the new legislation, announced the country's present legislation contained over 730 legal acts and regulations referring to the conflict of interests issues.

Tacheva said it was very important to settle properly the issue regarding the property of the civil servants.

She gave as an example the situation, in which a civil servant lived apart from their spouse but had not divorced. Meanwhile, the spouse acquired additional property without the knowledge of the official, which would make them liable and would bring them sanctions.

According to the Justice Minister, the many details with respect to the various situations involving conflict of interests would have to be carefully worked out in working committees starting Thursday.

Another controversial issue in the conflict of interests bills is the idea to ban Members of Parliament from freelance work with the exception of science or teaching and copyright.

The debates on the new legislation are set to continue on Thursday.
