Fifty people have lost their lives during the two weeks of anti-immigrant violence in South Africa and about 30,000 have been displaced by the backlash.

The violence started in the northern Johannesburg suburb of Alexandra on May 11 and then spread across the country, the police said, as cited by BBC.

Many of those who have sought refuge after the attacks on migrant communities are Zimbabweans, who have fled violence and poverty at home. Up to three million Zimbabweans are believed to be in the country.

Critics of President Thabo Mbeki accuse him of lack of leadership as he failed to order the army's deployment until May 21 in order to stop the wave of murders and rapes.

Thousands of immigrants have been streaming back to their home countries, many on buses provided by Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi.
