Parliamentary Group Warns of Drastic Jump in Transport Prices in Bulgaria

Bulgarian New Democracy (BND) issued Wednesday a declaration that aims at warning the citizens of a upcoming drastic jump in transport services prices.

Lidiya Shuleva, a member of the group, made a statement during the parliamentary sitting to comment on the recent protests staged by Bulgarian truckers over constantly rising fuel prices.
"The professionals' discontent came as a result of some wrong decisions made by the government," Shuleva said.

"Each and every Bulgarian driver is forced to give a fuel tip to the cabinet," she added.

About 1,000 truckers across Bulgaria launched protests on Monday demanding that the rulers urgently take measures to curb the constantly rising fuel prices in the country, which are among the highest in Europe.

During the last few years the gasoline excise increased by 128% while the tax hike for the diesel is 445.5 %, experts said.

Although the fuel taxes are still lower than those of the other EU members, the prices are already record high and truckers say they have started to fill their tanks in countries like Slovenia where the fuel is considerably cheaper.

According to transport companies, the high fuel prices are a result of speculation and cartel agreements.
