Bank Insolvency Rumors to be Checked by Agency for National Security

Business | May 17, 2008, Saturday

The State Agency for National Security (SANS) is conducting a checkup of the rumors about problems with First Investment Bank (FIB), as announced Friday by Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev.

Stanishev added that the checkup has been intiated at his personal request and commented that the rumors could very well have been a case of "black PR".

According to the PM, the state is constantly monitoring the bank system realizing that it is very important for Bulgarian banks to be in good shape it the light of the current global financial crisis.

"The state is not going to allow savings of Bulgarian people to become negatively affected", Stanishev assured bank customers. He reminded about previous times when the country had not have strict and constant measures conducted by Bulgarian national Bank (BNB), referring to Jean Videnov's government when 14 banks in Bulgaria had to be closed.

"Rumor scenarios related to unfair competition or political interests would be considered an extremely irresponsible act since people are driven to withdraw their money and loose money due to bank imposed penalties", said the PM. However, Stanishev made the statement without naming FIB.

Earlier, BNB's Director Ivan Iskrenov has also stated that he will be insisting in front of the Prosecutor's Office on clarification about the rumours' perpetrator.

The case with FIB is a scandal, not a crisis", Iskrenov has stated. FIB does not have and never had problems with BNB, it is in sound state and with high liquidity.

What do you make of the Bulgarian Formula 1-gate involving the Abu Dhabi company EABG?
It demonstrates the total incompetence of the Bulgarian state administration.

It is a plot on part of certain people trying to extort money from the Abu Dhabi company.

It is a attempt to establish a Formula 1 facility with foreign money in order to serve the interests of certain circles in Bulgaria.

It is a genuine attempt to find a proper foreign investor for a Formula 1 facility in Bulgaria which ran into trouble because of misunderstandings.
