Bulgaria Party Ataka Expels Deputy Mayor for Wearing Swastika

The Deputy Mayor of the Bulgarian city of Stara Zagora Tihomir Tomov has been expelled from the extreme right and nationalist Ataka party because he wore a swastika during the Army Day (May 6) celebrations in the city.

On May 6 Tomov was dressed in a jacket, which had an eagle and a swastika attach to it. This alarmed the Stara Zagora organizations of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, the Anti-fascist Union, and the Union of Reservist Officers, who insisted the Deputy Mayor must apologize to the citizens.

"This is not a Nazi sign, it is a sign of the Wehrmacht. In addition I was there as a citizen, the Municipality was represented by the Mayor Svetlin Tanchev. On top of that the swastika I wear could be seen among the ancient Bulgarian symbols, and in ancient China. It is also a Buddhist symbol, and ancient Bulgarian sign from the rule of Tsar Kaloyan" (1197-1207), Tomov explained quoted by the 24 Chasa Daily.

Several days later Tomov was expelled by the local organization with the Ataka party.

"Anyone who supports him is committing to support neo-nazism and neohitlerism. This is intolerable", said Mihail Mihaylov, the district coordinator of Ataka declared.

The Stara Zagora Mayor Prof. Svetlin Tanchev, who was elected from the GERB party of Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov, stated the Municipal Administration was going to await the final decision of the central organization of the Ataka party on the matter. After that, it was to decide upon possible administrative measures against the Deputy Mayor Tomov.
