A special bus of Sofia Municipality is going to take the Roma still remaining in the illegal ghetto in the Mladost 4 Quarter of the Bulgarian capital to their hometowns.

This was announced on Saturday by Iliya Iliev, a City Counselor from the GERB party and Chair of the Demographic Issues Committee at the Sofia City Council.

The bus with the Roma, who are mostly women and children, will depart on Sunday afternoon. Iliev explained that the same procedure would be applied next week to Roma squatters living in the Studentski Grad Quarter.

The Roma living illegally in the Mladost 4 ghetto are from the town of Berkovitsa in northwest Bulgaria and the city of Kyustendil in western Bulgaria. Most of them left voluntarily after the District Mayor recently issued an order for the destruction of the shantytown.
