The state Duma approved Putin's appointment earlier on Thursday with 392 deputies voting in favor and 56 voting against, with at least 226 votes necessary.
Only several hours later Medvedev signed the decree making Putin Chair of Russia's Council of Ministers.
The new Prime Minister now has one week to present to Medvedev his suggestions about the structure of the federal executive, and the candidates for the positions of Deputy PMs and Ministers.
As many international analyzers have pointed out, even though he now has the inferior position, Putin, who stepped down as President after his constitutionally allowed two terms, is still the man with all the power in Russia, whereas Medvedev remains his protГ©gГ©.
