The Appellate Court in Bulgaria's coastal city of Burgas confirmed Wednesday the suspended sentence given to the ice skating champion Maxim Staviiski over involuntary manslaughter and aggravated bodily harm.

In the beginning of February, the sportsman was imposed a 2,5-year suspended sentence and five years to be served in probation over drunk driving and causing the heavy crash.

Prosecution reiterated demands for the imprisonment of Staviiski about a month ago.

The appeal against Staviiski's first sentence was filled by the parents of comatose Manuela Gorsova and the relatives of Petar Petrov, who died in the car crash caused by the defender.

The civil claim filed on behalf of Gorsova and set at BGN 2 M was rejected and the court decided the girl would get BGN 80,000 compensation.

The compensation demanded by the parents of Petrov was also cut and Staviiski would have to pay BGN 180,000, instead of BGN 500,000.

The deadly crash occurred on August 5 last year after Staviiski veered into the opposite lane on a bridge over the Ropotamo River near Burgas and hit headlong into another car with four people riding in it. At the time of the accident, the skater had 1,29 per miles of alcohol in his blood.
