The District Court in the eastern Serbian town of Pirot sentenced Tuesday the Bulgarians Yashar Metin and Biser Angelov for smuggling of heroin.
Metin received a six-year sentence and Angelov three years. Both of them are from the city of Pazardzhik in southern Bulgaria.
The two Bulgarians were caught at the end of 2007 by the Serbian customs officers at the Gradina checkpoint with a total of 11,1 kg of heroin hidden in the bottoms of their travel bags.
Metin was trying to smuggle 7,4 kg of heroin, and Angelov had 4,7 kg. They were trying to reach the Netherlands with the drugs.
Before the Pirot Court, the Bulgarians claimed that someone else and not they had placed the heroin in their bags. They are to remain in the arrest until their sentences enter into force.
