Turkey Slams Argentina for Recognizing Genocide over Armenians

World | April 25, 2008, Friday // 00:00

Turkish foreign ministry spokesman declared Friday necessary initiatives were underway in relation to a new text adopted by the Argentine Senate, recognizing events from 1915 as genocide over the Armenian people.

"The Argentine Senate has approved a new text supporting the baseless Armenian allegations, which we strongly condemn and fully reject," the Turkish foreign ministry said, as cited by Hurriyet.

Following the adoption of the resolution, Turkish State Minister Mehmet Aydin cancelled a planned visit to Buenos Aires.

In Sofia, the proposed voting of a declaration expressing sympathy with the tragedy of the Armenian people in the Ottoman Empire ended in a scandal on the international Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day (April 24).

The members of the Sofia City Council from the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria party left in protest as the majority voted to remove the voting of the proposed Declaration from the agenda of Thursday's meeting.
