Ethnic Bulgarians' Party Runs On Its Own in Serbia Local Elections
Politics | April 25, 2008, FridayThe Democratic Union of Bulgarians is going to participate with its own town council ticket in the ethnic Bulgarians-populated border town of Bosilegrad.
The candidates for town counselors demand increased teaching of Bulgarian in the minority populated regions, and abolition of Bulgarian visas for the members of the Bulgarian minority in Serbia.
"We have always voted for Serbian parties which have not defended our interests", the Chair of Democratic Union of Bulgarians Dragolyub Ivanchov said in the Bulgarian city of Kyustendil, adding that the Bulgarians in Serbia did not have equal rights with the Serbs.
Ivanchov called upon all Bulgarians from Bosilegrad, who permanently live in Bulgaria, to come back on elections day and to vote for his party.
In his words, about 25 000 Bulgarians live in Serbia, 9 000 of which are in the Bosilegrad Municipality.
"We hope to become some sort of an important factor in Serbia if we win the local elections. We have party gatherings in the nearby towns and cities such as Surdulitsa, Vranya, Nish, Tsaribrod", the party leader stated.
Apart from lifting the limitation on teaching in Bulgarian and the abolition of visas, the Democratic Union of Bulgarians also demands the opening of the borders with Bulgaria and Macedonia. It plans to start publishing again the "Bulgarians" Magazine in the town of Bosilegrad.
The Bulgarian Construction Chamber in Kyustendil is already financing the printing of election posters for the Democratic Union of Bulgarians, and has donated funds for textbooks, study aids, and clothes for the Bulgarian children in Bosilegrad.
The chair of the regional unit of the Chamber Atanas Kirilov, who is a city counselor from the GERB party, has asked the Kyustendil City Council to support the election campaign of the Bulgarian party in Serbia.
