The extending of the green areas in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, and the introduction of green building roofs will become a priority for its administration.

The news was announced Thursday by Sofia's Chief Architect Petar Dikov, who opened a two-day international conference on the topic "Green Areas - Key to Sustainable Cities" in the Military Club building downtown.

The forum is part of an international project named "Green Keys", which will be completed on April 30. Its main purpose is the development of green city areas and parks as a means of creating sustainable urban centers.

Dikov declared that the planting of grass and trees on building roofs must become a necessary condition for allowing the construction of new buildings. With such measures the Sofia Municipality hopes to combat the greenhouse effect.

The Chief Architect pointed to the Japanese capital Tokyo and cities in the West as examples of widespread and successful roof grassing.

"This measure is applicable in Sofia as well but here it is primarily a matter of attitude", Dikov said, adding that with EU funding the Bulgarian capital might become again one of the "greenest" cities in Europe.

Later Sofia's Chief Architect stated that BGN 1 B was needed as compensations for the appropriation of green spots in the capital. He announced that in 2008 the municipal administration would try to create at least two new parks - in the "Zona B5" and Losenetz Quarters.

The Municipality is also working to extend the Northern Park, to create an Eastern Park in the Mladost Quarter, and to lease the Western Park to a concessionaire.

"The ideas about locking the parks at night as a security measure are still being considered", Dikov said.

Later on Thursday the first nine new eco-buses out of a total of forty-four, which have been purchased by the Sofia Public Transport Company, will be presented at St. Aleksander Nevsky Square.

The new vehicles run on methane, and are categorized as "Euro 5" - the European vehicle emissions standards with the strictest requirements. They are the first buses of this type in Bulgaria.
