The Illinois Senator and candidate for the Democratic Party nomination for the 2008 US Presidential Elections Barrack Obama commented on Bulgaria and its organized crime issues Tuesday in his speech before several ambassadorial nominees at the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Senate.

In his address to the future US Ambassador to Sofia, Ms. Nancy McEldowney, Obama said Bulgaria had made impressive economic progress in the recent years, and that it had the potential to become a regional energy resources distribution center.

Yet, the Illinois Senator stressed the country was facing severe organized crime and corruption issues. The presidential hopeful advised Ms. McEldowney to "work aggressively to assure that democratic backsliding" did not take place in Sofia.
