About 50,000 abortions occur in Bulgaria every year, the statistics of the Association for Obstetrics and Gynecology (AOG) read.

Nearly 76% of Bulgarian women disapprove abortion but only 4% of them rely on planned contraception, the results of an online survey in the frame of national campaign "It depends on you" show.

Statistics also show that Bulgaria is the country with the highest number of teenage abortions in Eastern Europe.

A total of 38 out of 1000 pregnant teenagers go for abortion, which is an extremely high number, AOG head prof. Nikola Milchev commented.

According to Milchev the high number of abortions is due to poor sexual education and knowledge.

"It is absurd that in 21st century Bulgaria there are 65,000 births and 50,000 abortions annually," Milchev concluded.
