Changes in the law that regulates issuing permits for possession of firearms are urgently required, Bulgaria's Interior Minister Rumen Petkov said on Saturday.

According to the minister, stricter rules are required as 90% of the appeals against the Interior Ministry over rejections for arms permits are accepted by the court and permits are then issued.

Petkov declared that in the next few days the ministry would publicly announce the law changes it is going to propose.

Petkov commented on the gun laws in relation to the recent tragic shooting case in Bulgaria's western town of Tran. On Wednesday, a 67-year-old man with a criminal record over paedophilia shot dead a 15-year-old orphan and injured two more children from a local institution before shooting himself with a legally owned rifle.

mario,

True. A change in gun-law can turn owners (normal people without bad intentions, but suddenly without a lisence) into criminals. I hope it'll be done with some common sense.

If people want a gun, they can get it one way or another. Usually the people planning to commit crimes with a gun, don't go to the gun store and buy one, but instead buy guns illegally so nothing can be traced.
