Bulgarians to Get on Public Transport with E-tickets

Society | February 28, 2008, Thursday

All Bulgarians are to use public transport services after paying for them by magnetic cards, starting July 1, Deputy Mayor Velizar Stoilov announced Thursday.

"The e-charging will be performed by a Czech company," the official said.

It emerged however a second competition is currently held to determine the executive company.

Deputy Mayor Stoilov said he did not know the reasons for organizing such a contest.

E-tickets
It took more than I have expected for Sofia's mayor and his advisors to realize that this is the only way to rervive the Public Transportation revenue. Little more investment and better management in the beginning could have solved the problem long ago, not setting the dogs (ticket inspectors) onto the people. However, it is promising to hear that this will be implemented until July.
Just not to be expected this adaptation process will go without social cataclysms - confused senior citizens, smart gratis-travelers, mean ticket inspectors, irritated bus drivers.
Hopefully an Internet option will be available for this service too...

Could it be this deputy mayor already handed out the deal (under the table) to a related company? There is BIG money involved in this kind of projects. The company who made the system for the registration of children in kindergartens (recently in Sofia introduced) cashed 380K for that. Downside: it proved to be a crappy system that crashed very fast as it could not handle the load.

The "temporary withdrawal" of INSEAD Professor Ilian Mihov from becoming Bulgaria's Deputy PM:
resulted from a malicious political plot attacking him in order to hurt the GERB party

resulted from the extravagancy of his ideas about modifying Bulgaria's currency peg leading many serious economists to raise genuine concerns over his appointment

resulted from dissent between the GERB party and its allies thus showing tensions in the ruling majority
