The United States is going to hold the Belgrade authorities accountable for failing to provide for the safety of the US embassy there, high-ranking US Department of State officials announced Saturday.
The embassy was invaded and set on fire by several hundred protesters on Thursday night during the Belgrade rally against Kosovo's independence.
"They are obliged to provide for the security of the diplomatic missions, and what we saw was that the Belgrade police was unable and had no desire to do that", the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice declared, stressing the US would hold the Serbs accountable.
A spokesman of the US embassy in Belgrade announced earlier that most of the US diplomatic staff and their families had been evacuated from Serbia.
Meanwhile, the corpse found in the US embassy after the incident was identified. The body belongs to a 20-year old Serbian student from the northern city of Novi Sad.
