The Sofia City Court sentenced the Italian citizen Salvatore Caraba to 18 years of imprisonment for the murder of the Bulgarian Sotir Sotirov committed with a knife on October 15, 2006, in the Knyazhevo quarter in Sofia.

Caraba was also sentenced to pay a BGN 400 000-compensation to the four claimants - Sotirov's parents and two children. The Italian is also to pay the case expenses amounting to BGN 3312, the claimants' expenses of BGN 1500, and a state fee of about BGN 16 000.

The prosecution demanded a life sentence but the defense managed to get a reduced term pointing to certain discrepancies in accusation statement, namely that it was not clear how many times the victim had been hit with a knife, and why there were no traces of blood on the knife and the crime site.

The verdict rests upon the testimonies of three witnesses.
