Bulgaria Head Mufti Holds Thanksgiving Service for President's Rescue

Politics | February 1, 2008, Friday // 00:00

The head mufti of Bulgarian Muslims Mustafa Alish Hadji performed on Friday a service in the Sofia mosque Banya Bashi to thank for the safe return of President Georgi Parvanov whose plane had to make an emergency landing at the Azores on its way to Mexico on Wednesday.

The initiative for the thanksgiving service came from the laity with many people phoning and requesting that a prayer for the President's rescue and health be held.

Similar ceremonies took place in the mosques in the cities of Smolyan, Shumen, Kurdjali, and Plovdiv.

Other religious communities in Bulgaria have not reacted yet to the plane accident.

It is believed that many Bulgarian Muslims cast their votes for Parvanov in the presidential elections in November, 2006.
