Bulgaria Parliament Honors Memory of Convicted by People's Court

Members of Bulgarian Parliament remembered with a minute of silence the 63rd year since the sentences issued and executed by the so called People's Court in 1945.

The People's Court was formed after the communist coup of September 9, 1944, when Bulgaria was factually occupied by Soviet troops. The Court tried and sentenced to death and various terms of imprisonment many prominent Bulgarian politicians from the 1941-44 period when Bulgaria was allied of Nazi Germany.

"They were guilty of standing for the principles of the Turnovo Constitution (Bulgaria's constitution in 1879-1947) and for the national interests", stated Veselin Metodiev from the rightist Democrats for Strong Bulgaria party led by former PM Ivan Kostov.

Metodiev read a special declaration for the occasion on behalf of Democrats for Strong Bulgaria, the United Democratic Forces, and the Bulgarian National Union.

He stressed that the People's Court is the darkest institution in the history of modern Bulgaria since it had sentenced to death more than 2000 people.
