Bulgaria: Industrial Views Photo by Yuliana Nikolova (Sofia Photo Agency)

Monumental industrial views brought so much pleasure to the communist senses that a monstrous steel mill became one of the symbols of Sofia. Its smoking chimneys still continue to remind nostalgic citizens and passers-by of the virtue of hard labor, but not for long.

Has there ever been any point in Kremikovtzi other than providing work for 8000-10000 people and symbolizing hard work on the back of the communist 20 lev note? Even if the builders of Kremikovtzi could not think of much more benefits to get from the huge plant, the new business era players in Bulgaria surely see the point in profitable maneuvers.

Business is good when one is welcomed as a blessed employer, keeper of virtues, and does not need at all to feel bad about stripping money from a doomed monster like Kremikovtzi. One could then sell assets under the only condition of sharing the cream and keeping the doomed alive for a few more years.

Until 2014 when the transition period agreed with the EU for avoiding clauses of its pollution directives will be over. If Kremikovtzi fails to meet strict pollution requirements after 2014, it will be closed.

The persistent lack of investments and continuous reselling of the plant, triggered by the rise in estate prices in Bulgaria, does not speak of much concern about keeping the fire burning in Kremikovtzi's furnaces.

One more time workers are wondering if the new owner will take care of the factory, or fast destructive profit will be the business plan essential. In a desperate attempt to rule their fate they protest and block the gates of the factory as if a mighty fortress, waiting to let in a blessed employer, not a devastator.

Time will show, onlookers say, already knowing the future of Kremikovtzi is not bright.

A few more years and the monumental industrial views near Sofia will be gone due to some twisted views on industrial development, dating back to the time of the old notes, and still alive in a new ugly business form today.
