Bulgaria: Comatose Crash Victim to Be Represented by Father during Trial against Staviiski Manuela Gorsova, 18, is still in coma after the deadly crash on Sunday night, in which one man died after Maxim Staviiski's Hummer hit his car headlong. Photo by Yuliana Nikolova (Sofia Photo Agency)

The girl, who was left comatose after the fatal crash allegedly caused by world ice-dancing champion Maxim Staviiski in August, will be represented by her father during the trial against the sportsman.

Krassimir Gorsov will be given the right to become a temporary trustee of his daughter, Manuela, as she is already of age, Veliko Tarnovo Regional Court ruled.

The young girl's relatives demanded a BGN 2 M compensation from Staviiski but the judges rejected the civil claim, grounding their decision on the law that orders a major must file such a document by himself.

Later, the victim's parents insisted that the skater should pay for her treatment in Israel.

"Manuela is still in coma, she has been like this ever since the crash, " the father of the 18-year-old girl told two weeks ago, denying earlier reports that she has regained consciousness.

"A team of very good experts are taking care of her and if a trip is deemed safe for her, we will be leaving for Israel in a month. I am sure she will be all right. I have never stopped believing this," Gorsov explained.

"I am ready to strike a deal with Maxim Staviiski if he agrees to pay for Manuela's treatment in Israel. In this case the amount of our claim for compensations will be quite different," he added.

World ice-dancing champion Maxim Staviiski is accused of causing his sports utility vehicle to crash into an oncoming car in August. Staviiski's Hummer veered into the opposite lane and bumped headlong into a Honda Civic with four people riding in it. The driver of the Honda Petar Petrov, 24, died in hospital and one of his passengers - 18-year-old Manuela Gorsova - was hospitalised in a coma.

During the time of the incident, Staviiski was driving with 1,29 per mille alcohol in his blood, which constitutes a criminal offence in Bulgaria.

The trial was given the go-ahead on January 10 only to be postponed until January 30.

The skater, meanwhile, is free on bail.
