Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov awarded Wednesday the private national radio broadcaster Darik a badge of honour on the occasion of the 15th anniversary since the media's founding.

The solemn ceremony, which took place in the Presidency building, was attended by many public figures, including the heads of Bulgaria's leading media.

"I would like to render my homage to everything Darik has done so far," the head of state said after presenting the radio's Chief Executive Radosvet Radev with the badge.

President Parvanov emphasized on the important social role Darik played by taking part in numerous campaigns, such as You Are Not Alone, dedicated to the cause of releasing the six Bulgarian medics from imprisonment in Libya, as well as the Bulgarian Christmas charity initiative.

Darik strengthened its position in Bulgaria's social life after covering live the events from the winter of 1997 when the worst violence since the collapse of one-party Communist rule erupted. Then demonstrators stormed the building of the National Assembly to confront more than 100 legislators from the country's governing Socialist Party and demand new elections.

The first private national radio is enjoying an ever-growing influence and currently has the highest ratings on the market, the media announced just days before the anniversary, marked on January 21.

The company also manages Bulgaria's leading online Bulgarian language media Darik News (http://www.darik.net ), which merged in the middle of September 2006 with Novinite.com, the biggest English language news provider in Bulgaria.

The top online project, called DarikWeb, Inc., was born after Darik News acquired 51% stake in Novinite OOD.
