New York police officers have discovered a cache of weapons, including pipe bombs, numerous types of guns and a crossbow, which is believed to be the possession of a Bulgarian national, the New York Times reported.
The discovery, made during the investigation of a report of a gunshot wound, led to a predawn evacuation of the building at 58 Remsen Street in Brooklyn Heights on Sunday morning.
The Bulgarian, identified as Ivaylo Ivanov, 31, called the police to report of a man with a gunshot wound at Long Island College Hospital.
When officers questioned Ivanov, he said he had been shot in the left index finger, only to admit later that he had accidentally shot himself.
Ivanov has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon, unlawful wearing of a body vest and reporting a false incident, the police said.
A search warrant was executed, and the other weapons were found. In all, officers discovered six pipe bombs, a pistol, a rifle, a shotgun, two pellet rifles, a crossbow with arrows, silencers, ammunition, a bulletproof vest and a machete, the police said.
Neighbours said that the Bulgarian shared the apartment with Michael C. Clatts, 50, a medical anthropologist and researcher who is the director for the Institute for International Research on Youth at Risk at National Development and Research Institutes in New York.
Clatts has not been charged with any crime.
