Putin Urges More Talks on Kosovo Status

Politics | January 18, 2008, Friday // 00:00

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Bulgarian counterpart Georgi Parvanov were unanimous that a unilateral solution to the issue of the future status of Kosovo is inadequate, since the settlement should be international.

President Putin, who paid a two-day official visit to Bulgaria, called for continuing the negotiations to find a legitimate solution on the status of Serbia breakaway Kosovo province.

"A compromise solution should be found to suit both the Albanian and Serbian part of the population," President Vladimir Putin said at a joint press conference with his Bulgarian counterpart on Friday afternoon.

"It is very important for us that the Kosovo issue does not turn into a dividing line between the member states of the European Union," Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov said.

The Bulgarian president recalled the Athens meeting of the foreign ministers of Bulgaria, Romania and Greece at the end of December, when they warned against tying Serbia's EU prospect to Kosovo issue.
