Fog Causes New Cancellations at Sofia Airport

Business | January 9, 2008, Wednesday // 00:00

Five Wednesday flights were cancelled at Sofia Airport after fog has prevented the planes from landing in the Bulgarian capital.

Austrian Airlines' flight from Vienna could not land and returned to the Austrian capital, with the return fixture from Sofia annulled by defatult.

Lufthansa's flight from Frankfurt landed in Thessaloniki, Greece, while another flight from Brussels was re-directed to Varna.

Flights from Sofia to Milan and Bologna have also been cancelled.

Sofia airport's runway is outfitted with a category II instrument landing system, which allows landing when vertical visibility is 30 metres and horizontal visibility of at least 350 metres.

A category III A certification would be required for the airport to operate if fog cuts visibility at the runway to 200 metres.

Hundreds of passengers faced fog troubles at Christmas, stranded at the Sofia airport after dense fog cancelled dozens of outgoing and incoming flights.
