The dead body of a 22-year-old woman has been pulled from beneath the debris of a collapsed visor that used to stick out over the entries of two banks' offices in the Bulgarian coastal town of Varna, police said.

The tragic accident occurred on the evening of January 2, but the body was discovered two days later when workers started to clear the site.

The young woman, called Gergana, was born in the town of Burgas, but was studying at a university in Varna. On the fatal day she went shopping, never to return.

The body was first identified by her boyfriend and then by the parents.

The visors at the offices of First Investment Bank, Raiffeisen Bank and the neighbouring shop, all located on Osmi primorski polk boulevard in Varna, collapsed at 9 pm on January 2.

Unconfirmed reports say that the collapse was caught on CCTV by the cameras at one of the banks. The last shot on the footage is said to show a girl, dressed in white.

An investigation into the case has been launched.
