Spanish Cabinet Extends Labour Restrictions on Bulgarians, Romanians

The Spanish cabinet decided at its last meeting in 2007 to extend the labour restrictions on Romanian and Bulgarian workers by one more year, daily Vanguardia reported on Saturday.

Despite efforts by the left-wing IU-ICV alliance in the Spanish parliament to lift the moratorium on the citizens of the two countries, imposed when their countries joined the European Union, during the year, the cabinet has decided against it.

Spain decided to implement a two-year moratorium for Bulgarian and Romanian workers when their countries joined the European Union on January 1, 2007.

The limitations mean that Bulgarians and Romanians, who wish to settle in Spain, are required to have a work permit in order to do so.

They are thus be subject to the same limitations, which Spain imposed on nationals from the ten countries, which joined the EU during the last wave of enlargement in 2004.
