Passengers at Sofia airport faced more fog troubles on Wednesday after dozens of outgoing and incoming flights were cancelled due to poor visibility.

Flights to Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Munich, Vienna and the Black Sea town of Varna were cancelled before their departure, according to the Sofia airport website.

Ten incoming flights from Burgas, Skopje, Vienna, Bucharest, Warsaw, Amsterdam, Varna, Istanbul, Brussels that were scheduled to land at Sofia airport on Wednesday, were also cancelled.

Another two, scheduled for Thursday from Vienna and Bucharest, were scrapped as well.

Heavy fog has caused the cancellation of scores of flights at Sofia airport during the Christmas holidays, disrupting the travel plans of thousands of people.

Sofia airport's runway is outfitted with a category II instrument landing system, which allows landing when vertical visibility is 30 metres and horizontal visibility of at least 350 metres.

But during the day, the fog blanket cut horizontal visibility at the runway to 200 metres, which would require at least a category III A certification.
