Manol Velev, the prominent businessman who was shot in the head outside his home in downtown Sofia in July, has been discharged from hospital on Wednesday.

The doctors from Military Medical Academy in Sofia said the victim now needs some rehabilitation but failed to deliver more details over his present condition.

Velev, husband of Bulgaria's youth and sports state agency chairwoman Vessela Lecheva and a prominent businessman who last year funded Socialist president Georgi Parvanov's re-election campaign, was shot on July 11 on Mizia street.

He was hospitalized in a deep coma. Later, Velev underwent a surgery to have the bullet taken out of his head.

The police never caught the shooter, nor did it disclose any details of its investigation, including possible leads.

Local media, however, speculated that Velev's numerous business interests, ranging from tourism and construction to transport and gambling, eventually put him at odds with Bulgaria's underworld.
