A 5-strong earthquake rattled Saturday the southwestern part of Greece, affecting areas ravaged by deadly August forest fires, Darik Radio reported.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or serious damage.
Seismologists at the University of Thessaloniki said the undersea quake occurred at 8:32 a.m. (0532GMT), 330 kilometres west of the country's capital city of Athens.

"Earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in this part of the country ... We will have to wait for one or two days before we can say that this was the main earthquake," a professor of geology at Athens University said.

The quake struck in an area affected by the country's worst wildfires on record, which killed at least 65 people in the period between August 24 and September 3.
