Bulgarians Reflect upon Vote Choice Before Local Elections

Politics | October 27, 2007, Saturday // 00:00

On Saturday the so called Contemplation Day, Bulgarian voters have to decide who would get their ballot on municipal elections that will take place October 28.

A day before the elections, Bulgarians are given the chance to consider which of the candidates is most eligible to represent their home places in the next four years.

A total of 35 district mayors, 2914 mayors of mayoralty, 264 municipal mayors and 5232 municipal councillors are to be elected during the forthcoming local vote.

Public opinion broadcasting is banned the day before the vote, as well as on Election Day while booths are open. The law also forbids bar and restaurant owners to serve alcohol during the day of elections.

The results will be announced in the early afternoon on October 30, within the 48-hour time limit. Official counter of the ballots will be the state company Informational Services.

Preliminary results will be available 90 minutes after the end of the voting day.

If none of the mayoral runners wins a straightforward victory in a city or town, garnering more than 50% of all eligible voters there, a run-off will be held in a week - on November 4.
