Bulgarian Ship Involved in Collision near Thessaloniki

Business | October 22, 2007, Monday // 00:00

Bulgarian ship Geo Milev collided with trading vessel Helena, sailing under Panama flag, three miles outside the Thessaloniki harbour in northern Greece, Bulgaria's state news agency BTA reported on Monday.

No sailors were injured in the collision and neither ship suffered any structural damage, but both vessels are under interdiction to leave the port's harbour.

Details concerning the cargo contents of either ship have not been disclosed, but initial reports claim there was no pollution due to leaks from the two ships.

This is the third collision reported in the Thessaloniki port over the past ten days. One of the previous crashes has claimed the life of a ship captain, BTA said.

An investigation is under way, ordered by Greek authorities, who blame the absence of a maritime traffic control system in the port for the accidents.
