Bulgarian Court Rules on Hellish Crash Killer Appeal

Crime | October 10, 2007, Wednesday // 00:00

Sofia Appellate Court is to try Wednesday the case against the truck driver, who caused the hellish chain crash near the town of Blagoevgrad, South-western Bulgaria, killing five people.

Ivan Chervenyakov has been left behind bars at the previous hearing, which was held a week ago.

Doctors attested that the defendant is in good mental and physical condition despite the brain concussion he suffered during the crash.

"I am really sorry! It just happened...!" Chervenyakov muttered in court.

The 34-year-old man from the village of Simitli, who has been delivered twice a suspended sentence for theft and burglary, sat behind the wheel of the truck without a driving licence.

The heavy accident occurred around 2 pm on September 24 on the road connecting the towns of Simitli and Razlog and involved six cars and two trucks.

Five passengers were killed, a five-year-old child among them. Another three people suffered serious injuries and have been hospitalised in critical condition.

Another seven people were also injured, but their lives are not in danger.
