Around 10 000 women are trafficked out of Bulgaria every year, and the number is rising, Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov said on Friday.
Some of the reasons are continued poverty, organised crime and a weak judicial system, he added.
Parvanov's words came during his address to the participants in a conference dedicated to countering and preventing women trafficking, which is hosted by former foreign minister Nadezhda Mihaylova in Sofia.
Although Bulgaria has adopted several legislative bills to crack down on women trafficking, but needs to allocate more money towards that goal, as well as set up a registry of victims of women trafficking, Parvanov said.
Women trafficking is on the rise globally, with up to 800 000 being forced into the sex slave trade annually, which brings organised crime an estimated EUR 8-12 B every year.

One is tempted to ask "so what?"
These things have been known about for decades and the filthy business continues even though the identities and whereabouts of the criminals is known widely and information about them has even been published on the internet...see for example www.bobiangelovastory.com. Those particular scumbags are still on the streets!
The criminal justice system in Bulgaria is about keeping the criminals out of jail so that they can earn a crust for corrupt law officers: there is really no other explanation of the postition Bulgaria finds itself in.
It is no accident that Bulgaria has a system where an acquittal can be bought by professional criminals in any and every case. Bulgarians like it that way!
If Gotse really wanted to get off his arse and do something, tell him to see me!
Otherwise he should shut up and spare us all the embarassment.
HYPCRITE!
