A total of 19 people were injured in the chain crash on Thursday morning near the town of Vratsa in northwestern Bulgaria on the road connecting the town to Oryahovo on the Danube.

One man died in hospital shortly before an ambulance that was due to take him to Sofia, but two more, who are in critical condition, will still be urgently moved for treatment to the capital, Bulgaria's national medical coordination centre said.

A total of 9 people were taken to hospital following the crash, which was sparked by one car attempting to overtake another, but its driver lost control, pushing both cars crashed into a minivan coming in the opposite lane, the police said.
