EU Founds International Relations Council

International Relations Council has been founded at a sitting of EU officials in Brussels.

The main objective of the body is to give new ideas concerning European foreign policy.

"We call on the EU member states' governments to develop active foreign policy based on our common values, which is to defend our common European interests," the declaration reads.

The newly established body will be chaired by former Dutch President Martti Ahtisaari, Germany's former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and Open Society Foundation's official Mabel van Oranje.

The council will be initially financed by the Spanish FRIDE organization, Swedish philanthropist Siegfried Rausing, Bulgarian Communitas Foundation and the foundations, owned by the global financier George Soros.
