Sofia Regional Prosecutor's Office indicted Wednesday the former head of the State Reserve Fund over charges with malfeasance in office.

Defendants in the case are a total of eight other people, the businessman Mircho Petkov, dubbed the Gipsy among them.

Stanislav Koparov is accused of authorising a deal with three firms to buy 100 000 tonnes of briquettes in 2003, although they are not on the list of goods stockpiled by the fund. The deal cost the fund BGN 11 M.

The prosecutors claim that the three companies that sold the briquettes cannot be held liable in this case, since the deal was done on the commodities exchange.

Another former head of the fund, Dimitar Dimitrov, also investigated for alleged abuse of power, has testified, saying that an order to buy the briquettes was placed by the Energy Ministry, but the cabinet never formally approved their inclusion on the list of commodities stockpiled by the fund.
