Bulgarian Prime Minister and Socialist leader Sergey Stanishev lashed out at the economic agenda of political rivals GERB on Tuesday, saying it would destabilise Bulgaria if implemented.

GERB, the party of incumbent Sofia mayor and tireless government critic Boyko Borisov, presented its economic platform last week, promising a sharp increase in wages, a 7% flat tax with BGN 1000 tax-exempt minimum and slashing the value-added tax.

The implementation of such a programme would financially destabilise the country, a drastic increase of inflation and no money for socially-sensitive areas.

Speaking at a meeting of mayor nominees endorsed by the Socialist party, he went on to imply that GERB was only serving limited corporate interests and was doomed to failure as voters would reject its message.

Stanishev also praised the party's own nominations, urging them to oppose xenophobia and follow the party's motto for next month's local polls, staying open for dialogue and showing themselves to be reliable.
