Sofia City Court acquitted Monday former Sofia mayor Stefan Sofianski on the case of malfeasance in office over Millennium Centre.

Previously the prosecution demanded four years and a half imprisonment for Sofianski for making a deal for the construction of the Millennium Centre, thus defrauding the municipal revenue with USD 5 M.

Facing charges in several cases of malfeasance, last year Stefan Sofianski was stripped of immunity on his own demand. But now it seems that all the other trials will be suspended over the same argument.

Signals that the amount set by the municipal council for the deal of Millennium Centre did not answer to the sum that was actually paid propped the court to delay the hearing until the matter is investigated.

Sofianski was already acquitted on the malfeasance charges over the deal with the capital's large department store Halite. The mayor had been completing a collective decision adopted by the municipal council and could not be sentenced for meeting his office duties, the court decided in June 2006.
